On the night of Jumu’ah the ikhwan (brothers) of Holy Islamville sat in Masjid Fatima to commemorate Hazrat Uthman ibn Affaan (may Allah be pleased with him), the companion of the Holy Last Messenger, Muhammad al-Mustafa (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) and the third caliph of Islam. On the day of Jumu’ah the mustarah (ladies) sat in Baitun Noor Shrine read about and discussed Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). It was on Jumu’ah, the 17th of Dhu’l Hijja 656 AH when two assassins took Hazrat Uthman from this world while he was reading the Holy Qur’an.
This group knows that Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is a very close companion of the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) because he was seen with him (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) in Baitun Noor Shrine along with the other Khulafaa-e-Rashideen (rightly guided caliphs), and Ghaus-el-A’zam, Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani.
[Baitun Noor Shrine is located in a quaint Muslim village in York, SC where Allah, the One Almighty Creator, manifest His name, the name of His Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him), and other miraculous manifestations on the walls. The Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) along with Khulafaa Rashideen, and other holy beings are seen visiting the Shrine often. Allah manifests His Signs to who He Wills and as He Wills and you are invited to come though we can’t say what the Almighty Creator will have for you in Baitun Noor Shrine, one of the holiest places in the Islamic world.]
During his twelve year reign he accomplished a lot: expanding the religion of truth—Al-Islam—establishing the navy, built mosques, roads, a huge dam, and etc. But to think that he authenticated and compiled the Holy Qur’an is to think wrong – this is a myth. Allah the One Almighty Creator says in the Holy Qur’an: “Verily We have sent the Qur’an and verily We are the Guardian.” Allah’s Protection has always been on the Holy Qur’an and it always will be.
Not to veer from the subject but it is very important to clear up this myth. The Holy Qur’an was divinely sent to the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) from Allah. He (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him), in the presence of the archangel Hazrat Gabriel (on him be peace), would memorize each revelation as soon as it came; he (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) then repeated it to his companions who wrote it down; they then had to read back what they wrote and any mistake was immediately corrected and rechecked. He (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) further checked and rechecked the Holy Qur’an that was memorized by the companions. The entire Holy Qur’an was written down under the personal supervision of the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him). The order of the Holy Qur’an was also divinely sent and taught to the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) by Allah.
All portions of the Holy Qur’an that had been revealed were revised and reconfirmed by the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) with Hazrat Gabriel every Ramadan. Once the Holy Qur’an was complete, the Ramadan before his (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) wasl (union with Allah, departure from this world) the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) and Hazrat Gabriel rechecked and reconfirmed the Holy Qur’an more than once. Therefore note that the entire Holy Qur’an was complied and authenticated by the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) during his lifetime on this earth in writing and in the memory of notable companions under the tutelage of the One Almighty Creator, Allah.
Caliph Hazrat Uthman undertook the task to assure that the Muslims were reciting the Holy Qur’an in the correct manner since Al Islam had spread to so many regions with different dialects. Each word of the Holy Qur’an had to be recited with correct and clear pronunciation with no ambiguity. He borrowed a Holy Qur’an that had been in the blessed hands of Compassion of the Worlds, the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him), therefore authenticated by him, from his wife Umm-ul-Mu’mineen, Syeda Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) to complete this task.
Leading to is demise it must be mentioned that Hazrat Uthman was of the Umayyad clan or Bani Umayya who had a blood feud with Bani Hashim or the Holy Last Messenger’s (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) clan from the time of the Battle of Badr to now, though now Bani Umayya take on other names. Hazrat Uthman’s ancestry or the feud of his clan had no bearing on his loyalty, sincerity and devotion to Al Islam. He was known as the holder of two lights because he married two of the Holy Last Messenger’s (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) daughters and the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) said that if he had a third he would have also married her to him.
He (May Allah be pleased with him) converted early and was one of the first to make hijra (migration) to Medina to escape the suffering and tortures meted out to Muslims mostly by his clan; whereas many in his clan did not convert until the Conquest of Mecca to save their lives, property and businesses. However when he was caliph many members of his clan held leadership positions in government and had private properties, like Fadak, which were forbidden in the previous caliphate. He was accused of favoritism, nepotism, etc. and thus there was sedition during his caliphate.
Many Muslims were incited to see the Umayyads as governors, chief secretary of state, etc. because they knew of their nefarious ways, which included drunkenness and lewdness, and also many Muslims knew that they only accepted Islam for worldly gain. The sedition grew, mostly incited by a hypocrite Jew (a devil in human form). Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was of a kind, gentle, tender hearted nature, good to all and did not hesitate to help his fellow man. This soft character along with leniency prevented him from ruling with the iron fist necessary to quell a rebellion.
His assassination fanned the flames of the age old blood feud between Bani Hashim and Bani Umayya which peaked on that most horrendous day in the history of the family of the Holy Last Messenger (perpetual and countless peace and blessings be upon him) [and the most tragic event in the history of mankind] 10 Muharram 61AH, the Tragedy of Karbala. |
